Buying your engagement ring can be an exciting yet daunting process. The diamond and jewelry terminology can be confusing and the myriad of engagement ring designs can make the engagement ring selection process seem almost impossible.
Though armed with some general guidelines your engagement ring buying process can be a great deal easier.
The information on this page will hopefully help you to choose your engagement ring.
There are three components that you need to consider when it comes to choosing your engagement ring. The engagement ring components are:
If you are choosing a diamond engagement ring you need to learn information about diamonds and diamond terminology.
The attributes of diamonds are referred to as the 4Cs - known as the diamond Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat.
For detailed information on selecting a diamond for your engagement ring see the How to buy a diamond information page.
Next, you need to consider the type of the Metal that will be used in your engagement ring.
Most Engagement Rings are made in either Gold or Platinum. The Gold can be 18kt, 14kt or 9kt and be either white, yellow and/or rose gold.
18kt gold, whether it is white, yellow or rose gold is the best and preferred choice for Gold Engagement Rings followed, by 14kt.
18kt tends to look better with age and for yellow gold rings 18kt has a more golden color than 9kt.
For more information about Gold see the jewellery metal advice page.
Platinum can also be used for engagement rings, though you should note that Platinum is significantly more expensive than Gold.
For more information about the differences between White Gold and Platinum visit the Platinum vs.White Gold information section.
Almost all of the engagement rings from Gillett's Jewellers that appear on this web site can be made in platinum. If you would like a platinum engagement ring and you see an engagement ring on this web site that you would like to be made in platinum for you, please send us an e-mail asking for a quote.
The final and most personal decision to make is the Engagement Ring Design.
To help you with choosing your engagement ring we have provided 4 factors that will hopefully help you in finding the perfect design for your engagement ring.
Choosing an engagement ring is ultimately a matter of personal preference, though there are four engagement tips that will help you to avoid some pitfalls in engagement ring design.
The four important factors that you should consider when choosing your engagement ring design are:
If an engagement ring lacks any of these properties it is not of good design and is not the Engagement Ring for you.
What is easy and practical depends on your lifestyle. The higher the setting of the diamond or gemstone in your engagement ring, the more often it will catch on things. If you work behind a desk all day you may be able to wear a very high set ring. On the other hand, if you are a preschool teacher you will have to wear a safe ring low set ring that won't get caught.
Your engagement ring must withstand constant every day wear. Some environments are more destructive to engagement rings and jewellery than others. For example, a work area near a factory that uses abrasives is bad news for jewellery. Surprisingly one of the worst places for jewellery is an office where you use a lot of paper. Paper is mildly abrasive, and constant daily exposure to that type of environment will wear your jewellery over the years. So if you are in an environment where your engagement ring is likely to wear, a heavier style will last longer, and cause you less worry. However, "heavy" doesn't necessarily have to mean wider, it just means a sturdy, strong well constructed shank/band.
Your engagement ring design must hold your diamond securely. The following is a general guide for engagement ring gemstone settings:
This is where your personality comes into play. Only you can decide what looks good, so this one is entirely up to you!
If you find an engagement ring design that you like and it complies with these four requirements you may have found the engagement ring for you.
Happy engagement ring hunting!
